One of the best Bond movies.

That line you used in the very beginning of this review, is one piece of
evidence for some crossover Dr Who fans to link James Bond as a Time Lord
to justify the changing actors. I think it is silly, but it is a curious
line. I haven’t seen the movie in some time, so I don’t know the context. I
like to think that they are different men and that ‘James Bond’ is just as
much a code name as 007. That’s just my take.

Words can not express how much I love ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ :)

  5. 32 Bit Rich says:

awesome review as always Oliver. I really like the time and effort you put
    into these reviews!

  6. jugulator95 says:

hey Oliver will you ever do the lethal weapon movies?

  7. mengutimur says:

Do a retrospective for L.A. Confidential.

You know this is the only Bond film that I haven’t watched. As it goes
under the radar in the 007 franchise & George only played the character
once until now I always thought that this was the first Bond movie they
made, I didn’t realise it came out after Connery’s stint then they brought
    him back after.

I like both the old & new Bond films, the old ones are just classics but
they can be very silly in places which is why I always wanted a Bond movie
with a more serious tone so when they kind of rebooted the franchise with
Daniel Craig I loved them as it’s what I had been waiting for. I think
Daniel Craig is a great Bond but Connery will always be the definitive Bond
for me, Craig is prob my 2nd fave Bond though.

  9. SolarDragon007 says:

I think they recast Blofeld because they wanted someone that could bring
some physicality to the role, what with the fight scenes the character is
    involved in in this movie

  10. SolarDragon007 says:

This and Casino Royale are my two most favorite films in the entire series

  11. ryanbuffet says:

I was sooo anticipating this review! One of my most favorite Bond movie of
all time next to License to kill

  12. Xenu says:

I’m going to have to add this one to-view list! Another great review! :)

  13. TheKrynoidMan says:

This is my favourite Bond film, despite Lazenby’s somewhat weak
performance. I do agree that he would have improved had he played the role
    a few more times.

  14. leeboy2k1 says:

Absolutely first rate as per Oliie! if I knew Kermode personally I’d tell
him to give you a job 🙂
    P.s who is “Terry Savalas”?:3:53.lol

  15. Luke Elliot says:

Blofled was changed because they thought the 5′ Pleasance would look silly
in the action scenes. In the books Blofled often changes his appearance as
    well.

  16. steve cheevers says:

without doubt one of my favourite Bond films, I think Lazenby was fine and
doesn’t deserve half the hate he gets. He’s the perfectly suited Bond, he
looks like he pull any woman while rip the head of any guy, only Connery
and Craig have had that. Diana Rigg gives a great performance only Eva
Green tops her in Casino Royale. The best John Barry soundtrack for me. The
opening theme is still awesome. The ending still gets you and is still
bleakest moment in a Bond film. Still take Casino Royale and Skyfall over
it but I put OHMSS over Connery’s best Bond’s.

  17. Balthazar says:

Beautiful composition at the end :)

  18. kyle reese says:

good choice of film to review olly this film has definitely grown on me
over the years, one of the best bond films maybe even the best

  19. John Curcio says:

I think you touched upon something in this review, Olly. A lot of viewers
immediately criticize te film without having seen it because it’s “the one
with Lazenby”, which, to the uneducated, sounds like a bomb. But this
really is a fine piece of filmmaking. And Telly Savalas is my favorite
Blofeld. Ironic that you say he’d make a good Lex Luthor because Clancy
Brown based his performance as the animated Luthor off of Telly in this
    film lol

  20. Tom Gallagher - Dymanic Films says:

my favorite bond film of all time, even if connery is my favorite bond

  21. Larry Bundy Jr says:

It’s one of my fave Bond films, definitely in my top 5.

But did you see the Daniel Craig re-make of it in 007 Legends? Eugh.

  22. TheSEMAJ1117 says:

Awesome Bond film it’s one of my favourite Bond films. You should do a
retrospective of ‘Universal Soldier’ (1992) it’s a great Jean Claude Van
Damme film. There’s not much videos about it on YouTube so it will be a
great film to do a retrospective on.

  23. Hal Coley says:

Have you considered a retrospective on Blade Runner?

  24. Joecbg100 says:

    Typical Bond slap lol.

  25. Lee Caskey says:

An underappreciated gem of a film. People have always been fickle about
Bond. Some actors are liked and others are “meh” and I agree that Lazenby
did do his best. The producers made the mistake early on of advertising
“Connery IS BOND!” leaving no room for a replacement actor and I think just
about anyone cast in the role would have been heavily critiqued. UA paid
dearly to get their “Bond” back again for Diamonds, only to plunge us into
    the Moore years afterwards.

Diana Rigg is easily my favorite Bond girl and does a fantastic job
throughout portraying such an ideal match for Bond that the tragic ending
really hits hard. Like Casino Royale, this movie took several viewings for
me to truly appreciate and acclimate to the changes made to the character
and world of Bond that go far beyond just the actor depicting him. Change
was, and will always be, needed and just like The LIving Daylights,
Goldeneye, and Casino Royale it’s refreshing to see Bond get updated.
